Tabarruj

Usamah ibn Zayd reported:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“I have not left a trial after me more harmful to men than women.”

What is Tabarruj ?

Allaah, Azza wa jal, mentions in his Noble Book, The Quran :

"And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves immorally (tabarruj) like that of the Days of Ignorance. And establish the prayer and give the Zakaat and obey Allaah and His Messenger"

Surah Al-Ahzaab:33

Ibn Katheer (rahimahmullaah) said: Mujahid said: "A woman would go out and walk amongst men (i.e intermingling). This was the Tabarruj of the Day of ignorance."

Qatadah said: "The women would walk out, swaggering and flirting (with men) so Allaah forbade them from doing that"

Muqatil bin Hayyan said: "Tabarruj is when a woman puts a Khimar on her head but not fastening it properly so her necklaces, earrings and neck, and all of that can be seen. As a result of this, these are all exposed from her. This is Tabarruj"

(Mukhtasar Tafseer Ibn katheer, volume 3, page 94)

Imam Al-Qurtubee (rahimahullaah) said: "From the ways of Tabarruj is that a woman wears two transparent garments that describe her body"

(Tafseer Al-Qurtubee, volume 12, page 310)

Imam Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Naasir As-Sa’dee (rahimahullaah) said: This (ayah) means: Do not go out whilst you are beautified or perfumed, as the women of the Days of Ignorance used to do since they did not have any knowledge or religious characteristics.

(Tafseer Ibn Sa'adee, volume 6, no.107)

Imam Al-Albanee (rahimahullaah) said: "Tabarruj is when a woman exposes her adornment, body features and all that she is obligated to cover which invites the desires of men"

(Mar'at-il-Muslimah, page 54)

Tabarruj is the display of women’s adornment, to lure men through your behaviour, or showing your awrah in front of non mahrams. It includes :

- Exposing the beauty of her face or body (wearing makeup or khol, tight or transparent clothes, uncovering some parts of the body).

Shaykh al-Albaani (rahimahullaah) answers on the question : “Is it allowed for the woman to put on make-up if she leaves her house wearing the hijaab?” :

“It is not permissible for the woman who does not wear hijaab, let alone who wears hijaab, to use the makeup of the disbeliever, the make-up of the rebellious and disobedient (to Allaah).

When were you aware of some women’s adornment called by a name for which Allaah did not send down an authority: ‘make-up’?

This is a word that we don’t know, not us nor your forefathers from before. Rather, it is a foreign word expressing an adornment for the rebellious and disobedient women of Europe; and our women – except those of them whom Allaah protects – unfortunately imitate decorating themselves with this adornment which the Islamic society is being affected by, namely make-up.

So it is not permissible for the woman. And this reality is one of the strange ironies: in the road we see a woman wearing a decent hijaab (but) I don’t say the Islamically legislated hijaab; she ties what they call the ‘ishaarb’ – or khimaar which is the (correct) Arabic word – covering her hair, her neck and so on, but she has face powder and lipstick on.

This (wearing the hijaab) is against this (wearing make-up): two contradictory, conflicting matters that do not go together.

What is the reason (for this type of occurrence)? It is one of two things: either ignorance and heedlessness of the Islamically legislated ruling or it is due to the women’s following of the whisperings of shaytaan.

- Exposing the beauty of her clothes and jewellery. This includes Niqab and Jilbab as they intend to conceal the woman and her beauty from public view, and should not be things which actually enhances her beauty or draws attention. Therefore, the jilbab should not have — bright colors, eye-catching decorations, nor have a glossy and/or reflective fabric that will draw attention of mens.

- Wearing perfume :

Abu Musa reported:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Every eye can commit adultery. The woman who adorns herself with fragrances and passes by an assembly of men is as such,” meaning an adulteress.

Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2786

- Throught the way she talks and moves :

From Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah li’l-Buhooth al-‘Ilmiyyah wa’l-Iftaa, 6/83 :

[… But it is not permissible for a woman to speak in a soft or alluring voice, because Allaah says, interpretation of the meaning] :

“O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allaah), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner”

Al-Ahzaab 33:32

Shaykh Al Albani on wearing high heels :

[… Further, that type of shoe changes a woman’s way of walking, causing her to tilt from left to right, and therefore, the wicked and unbelievers choose this type of shoe…]

From Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, Majallat al-Buhooth, 9/46 :

What Is The Ruling On Women Wearing High Heels ?

[… It also makes women look taller than they really are and makes their posteriors appear more prominent, and this is a kind of deception and showing the adornments which the believing woman is forbidden to show, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning]:

“And not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, headcover, apron), and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband’s fathers, or their sons, or their husband’s sons, or their brothers or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam)”

Al-Noor 24:31

Further more in a Hadith :

The Messenger of Allaah (may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"And the worst of your women are the ones who commit Tabarruj, who strut around in arrogance. They are the hypocrites. None from among them (i.e. these women) will enter Paradise except (those who are) like the rare crow."

(Reported by al-Bayhaqi in his Sunan 7/82) and authenticated by al-Albanee in his as-Saheehah (4/1849)

Commenting on this hadeeth, Imaam al-Albaanee (rahimahu Allah) said: "What is meant by the rare crow is that which has a red beak and red legs, as occurs in a hadeeth that states the small amount of women that will enter Paradise. (The hadeeth Imaam al'Albaanee is referring to is the one by 'Amr bin al-Aas who said: "One day we were with the Messenger of Allaah on this mountain path when he said: "Look! Do you see anything? We said: We see a crow that is very strange. Its beak and its legs are red." So Allaah´s Messenger said: " No one among will enter Paradise except for those who have the similitude of this crow in strangeness." (Reported by Ahmad 4/197 and Abu Ya'laa 1/349, and authenticated by al'Albaanee in as-Saheehah (4/1850).)

This is since there are very few crows that match this type of description." Silsilaat ul Ahadeeth as'Saheehah vol.4, no.1849.

Don’t let people who do not bring any benefits except from their own experience confuse you about what is right and what is wrong. No one is perfect, we all are in the same boat, we should help one another in standing tall for the truth. Everyone has opinions and experiences, do not put yourselves before The Book of Allah and The Sunnah of The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, jugements do not emanate from us. By reminding one another, we are trying to bring awareness, trying to not let people drown in confusion and darkness...

May Allah protect us from Tabarruj. ❤️
